It seems to me that I've heard "lynching" and "lynching party" used increasingly, especially by conservatives, to mean "public dogpiling of negative comments". This use itself is one I find nauseating in the extreme. But if I had to guess, I'd guess that it's this sense that he's referencing here, which in turn kind of makes me happy that it bit him on the ass in this way.
