for the record, part 2

As long as I'm putting down my Harry Potter predictions, I also decided I know what's going to happen to Harry by the end of the series:

The permanent Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts!

And then, on the last page ever, he gets run over by a train.

Naah, on the last page, he wakes up from the dream -- in his cupboard under the stairs.

Sounds good so far!

The YA librarian where I work was flaunting her copy of Half-Blood Prince about today, although out of courtesy to the patrons, she'd hidden it inside the cover of her copy of Order of the Phoenix. The stinker wouldn't give me ANY hints though!

Alternatively...

A very strong rumor has it that Rowling will be killing off Harry heroically at the end of book #7 (i.e., the one after this one).

It takes a long time for light to reach us from the sun. Aren't the most intrepid fans going to go to a place closer to the sun, in order to be the first people to get the last book? When do we start hearing from people on Mercury about how it ended?

I don't buy it. Adult literature might do that for the heroic tragedy component, and while the Harry Potter books appeal strongly to adults, it's still children's literature at heart and the readership base remains primarily children.

It would be a brave turn for the books to take -- might even be the best choice artistically -- but I completely disbelieve that she would do something like that to the kids who literally grew up reading these books.

She's clearly setting up Harry as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor: look at some of the comments about it in book #5 ("You're the best Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor we've ever had!")

Ha! I just finished the book and am trying to catch up on discussions. ANd I DO think she'll kill Harry off in the 7th book. See my latest LJ entry...
