Did you know that there's a service called Google Alerts?

So that you can get advised of new pages as soon as they appear in Google? Like, say, any page mentioning your last name?

Yeah, neither did I.

Oh well. :-)

DRAT!!!

No fun there.

Still want to know how the hidden treasure trove went...

Darn that technology! Oh well. It was a fun idea. (Was she at least surprised?)

*laugh* Oh well, it's cool anyway. Dang google-state we live in.

Oh no!!!! Well, I'm sure she appreciated the thought and effort.

I wonder if I should sign up for that for the PHKL.

Was she at least surprised?

She was. :-)

Definitely!

And we know she felt loved, so it worked even if it didn't work. :D

*huggles all around*

I've been using this for a year or more. It's really useful. Oh, and it only searches newspapers and news web sites. Not all of google. However, I find it great to track if anyone is mentioning:

1. The company I work for
2. The company I used to work for
3. My name
4. My hometown (haven't been there in years, but I hear the big events!)
5. The names of political operatives that I track... people that I dislike as well as people that I like.
6. The names of CEOs that have left your companies, or other people that might be mentioned in the news.

Tom

Oh, and it only searches newspapers and news web sites. Not all of google.

I don't know about "all of Google", but it isn't limited to newspapers or news sites -- my alert on "Seebacher" turned up http://www.unchi.org/birthday/ , after all, and right before that a new (or newly updated) Austrian computer firm's site, http://www.seebacher.co.at/ .

It found the birthday thing! Drat!

Oh well. Google giveth, and google taketh away.

I've been using this for about a year with Google news so that I get press releases about my employer or its competitors immediately. It works!

I think you're talking about Google's "News Alert" feature. The thing that gave away the game to Ellen is a third-party service, http://www.googlealert.com/, which does indeed search all of Google.

[identity profile] yesthattom.livejournal.com 2004-05-08 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that was my confusion.

Oh, dear. And oh, giggle.
