Did you know that there's a service called Google Alerts?

So that you can get advised of new pages as soon as they appear in Google? Like, say, any page mentioning your last name?

Yeah, neither did I.

Oh well. :-)

DRAT!!!

Darn that technology! Oh well. It was a fun idea. (Was she at least surprised?)

And we know she felt loved, so it worked even if it didn't work. :D

I've been using this for a year or more. It's really useful. Oh, and it only searches newspapers and news web sites. Not all of google. However, I find it great to track if anyone is mentioning:

1. The company I work for
2. The company I used to work for
3. My name
4. My hometown (haven't been there in years, but I hear the big events!)
5. The names of political operatives that I track... people that I dislike as well as people that I like.
6. The names of CEOs that have left your companies, or other people that might be mentioned in the news.

Tom

I don't know about "all of Google", but it isn't limited to newspapers or news sites -- my alert on "Seebacher" turned up http://www.unchi.org/birthday/ , after all, and right before that a new (or newly updated) Austrian computer firm's site, http://www.seebacher.co.at/ .

I think you're talking about Google's "News Alert" feature. The thing that gave away the game to Ellen is a third-party service, http://www.googlealert.com/, which does indeed search all of Google.

I've been using this for about a year with Google news so that I get press releases about my employer or its competitors immediately. It works!
