V is for vehicular distress

V is for vehicular distress, originally uploaded by qwrrty.

After about another 3/4 mile the car stopped entirely and smoke started coming out from under the hood. Busted transmission line.

Please tell me this was a car you were following, and not driving?

I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave.

Is that the official diagnosis?

It is now. :-) $100 at the shop, car's back in our driveway now.

Glad it wasn't worse!

Agreed!

the rest of your birthday can only be an improvement

That would be catastrophic system dump, definitely; smoke is a bad sign in any case. How badly damaged is the transmission?

The guy at the shop said the transmission itself is okay. I guess I got the car off the road and turned it off before any permanent damage was done?

Phew; evidently you did pull over quickly enough. I expect you did shorten the life of the car somewhat, but that's better than the alternatives.

Eh, not necessarily. Depends on whether it had been leaking slowly for awhile and on how hot it got in there. Cold day, quick fluid loss, quick shutdown, may not matter much in the grand scheme of things.

BUNNY.

Hydraulic fluid bunny, but still... bunny.

Or maybe a raven or raptor.

What, this isn't a Rorschach test?

I'm going to vote "no bunny" because it looks way too much like Frank the bunny for my comfort, and that's just not right.

And another "Um, happy birthday!" Smoke coming out from under the hood sounds kind of impressive (not the place for birthday candles, though), and though $100 is pretty annoying, at least it wasn't much much worse as it could have been. Anyway, I hope the rest of your birthday was much better!
