friday in the common with tim

friday in the common with tim, originally uploaded by qwrrty.

It's a lovely day to sit in a coffee shop and drink hot cider and eat croissants and watch the rain while waiting for them to fix your alternator. Well, maybe except for that last part.

Now if only my VPN would work. Oh well. More cider?

I like the picture. Captures the rainy Spring day feeling nicely. And looking at it, I can almost smell the hot cider. It'd go nicely. =)

ObGeek: Sometimes in coffeeshops with poor connectivity, I use ssh tunnels + VNC to connect to my home computer, turn the VPN on there, and then route things from my laptop through the home machine to the VPN in question. Depends on how important this is to you. (And on making sure you don't have the "send all traffic through VPN" flag enabled.)

I can only VPN from the company laptop. If I tried to extract the certificates from it so that I could set up VPN on my home machine, I'm reasonably sure that a remote-controlled bear trap would spring out of the laptop and close over my wrists until the IT squad arrived to collect me.

Too bad for me! *sips more cider*

... remote-controlled bear trap ...

Ahhh, yes. I understand that one. Trying to make IT happy has occasionally meant copying large files via ssh tunnel from machine A through vpn 1 to my home computer to machine B through vpn 2. I recently received unofficial permission to occasionally open up ssh to machine B to the outside world. Makes a huge difference.

A few months ago, I saw a new contractor learn the difference in perspective between "IT" and "programmer". It's a large one. And to be fair, that's kind of necessary, but it's still painful sometimes.

Oh, lord yes, and though my words may be tart I really hold no ill will with those guys. I sure spent enough time working in those trenches to know what a hard line it is to walk. Bring on the bear traps, guys! It's OK!

Wow. What a radical weather difference only an hour south...

And only 25 minutes south of home, where it was snowing heavily when I went to pick him up. Didn't end up sticking much, though :}

I blame the politicians for the hot air cloud over Boston.

hey, that's my corner. And I'm always home on Friday. Except today when my project was not done on Thursday, so I'm in cambridge instead. So I can't walk over and say hi.
Hi!
