the penning of the snark

Louisa May Alcott, with pink pen
There appears to be a tradition of giving dead authors a cheap plastic ballpoint pen. Perhaps it only happens on Memorial Day?

Nathaniel Hawthorne, with blue pen
Here we see Nathaniel Hawthorne with his cheap blue pen. Maybe this is something the old, bitter local writers do to young fresh-faced aspiring writers, like a snark hunt.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. No pen!
Ralph Waldo Emerson doesn't get any pen at all! What's up with that? He doesn't rate?

Y'know, I really should make a point of seeing those graves before leaving town. Are they easy to find?

Author's Ridge really is a little gallery of the 19th-century literary lights -- everyone's clustered together. I didn't get to see Thoreau's grave, myself, but Ellen says she passed it. C'mon up this weekend and we'll take a tour :-)

Excellent! How about Saturday morning? I'm planning on gracing [livejournal.com profile] tamidon's clothing swap in the early afternoon and that might work out jeeeest fine. If this weekend ends up to be problematic, then let's consider another. I really really want to see this place.

Oooh! We get to be all LITERARY!!
