quick geeky request

Does anyone have a spare wireless access point they're not using, or that they won't need for another 7-10 days?  It would come in very handy to get [livejournal.com profile] keyne Internet access.  She can get a cable modem in her room but not wireless.  Doesn't have to be fast, doesn't have to offer lots of firewalling features, just has to offer 802.11 in some shape or form.

Let me see if I can dig out our old graphite Airport base station. If I can find it, and we can make arrangements for a handoff, it'll be available. It's old enough that it's 11b (and 40 bit WEP if you use WE"P") only, but it will bridge or NAT from the wireless side to the wired side.

For making handoff logistics arrangements, my @lj email is easiest.

Found it. I'm going to put it into a highly generic config (acquire its address via DHCP on wired, NAT distribution of IPs on wireless, open net, no WEP) so it'll be ready to roll if & when.

Thank you so much for the offer! [livejournal.com profile] inseriatim was headed out this way anyway and dropped off a WAP not in use at her house. We're all set.

I got one locally, but I am incredibly touched and grateful that you would do this. Thanks, man.

I have one that Tom and I just replaced because it occasionally drops the connection. ("Occasionally" was more than once a day for him on the second floor, but only once a month or so for me on the first; the AP was in the basement.) I'll need to zap its settings, which I think I can do easily enough. Would you be able to pick it up in Quincy? I've got a friend visiting from out of town starting this weekend, and I don't think I'll have a chance to run the AP out to you before she arrives. I can leave the AP out on the porch, so you can pick it up any time.

(You can find my address, along with links to directions and maps, here; that post is also linked from my userinfo page.)

Thanks for the offer! [livejournal.com profile] inseriatim was able to meet me on the bike path for a delivery :-)

Add my spare Linksys WRT54G to the pile of offers. I can drop it off at your place tomorrow (Saturday) if need be.

Dude. If you're coming out this way anyway -- or looking for an excuse :-) -- that would just be too awesome!

All right! I've been wanting to go for a long ride. What time will you be in?

For some part of the time between about 1pm and 4pm we'll be at [livejournal.com profile] fraterrisus's birthday party in Natick.

Before 1pm I was thinking of taking the kids biking on the Minuteman, which we haven't gotten to do in a couple of weeks. That might be a good place to meet if the timing is right.

Some time after 4pm we'll go over to visit E, time to be determined. We
can schedule around that if necessary.

What works for you -- handoff on bikes in the morning, or the long slog out in the late afternoon? :-)

[identity profile] inseriatim.livejournal.com 2006-06-17 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Give me a call if you do go to the Minuteman, and I'll come meet you if I'm sufficiently awake. Otherwise, it's no trouble to be there at 4pm. I'll call you when I leave.
