heard recently in my household, vol 2

A recent posting by [livejournal.com profile] agaran reminded me of this story, which took place earlier this summer:

The scene: in the car, on the way to visit [livejournal.com profile] keyne in MGH.  The driver in front of me was taking a leisurely pace.  I was unhappy with it and told him as much, until he wandered off onto a different road.

Quinn picked up the thread and started saying: "Dammit! Shit! Dammit! Fuck! Dammit!" or some such.

While I was struggling to find the right thing to tell Quinn, Morgan turned to him and said sternly: "Quinn!  Those are grownup words."

And then, while I was struggling to find the right thing to tell Morgan, he went on: "And besides, that asshole already got out of our way!"

I gave up struggling and quietly promised myself a drink later.

Well, fortunately I will be unable to make things worse!

*smooch*!

Ow. Laughed too hard.

Linguists find that sort of thing fascinating. The horrible truth is that the right thing to tell them (at least, IMO) is long and complicated.

[livejournal.com profile] tamidon and I were talking about this just yeasterday. How she uses questionable language around her girls and how she tells them that they can't use that language. She tells tham that there are things you can't do until you are a grown up, like drive a car, or drink etc. And there are words you can't use until you are a grown-up. Those are words they can't use until they are grown up. They understand it and don't use them. Even though one of her youngests first sentences was "Yankees Suck!"

That almost cost me a keyboard. Good thing I'd swallowed what I was drinking before I read this.

I luuurve those kids. They're trouble, I tells ya.

This was a follow on from the conversation about how I am apparently very consistent about how I swear at drivers, after hears 16 month old Alyssa mutter "Sheezus" when I had to quickly decelerater and "ahssho" when I honked my horn. The "Yankee's Suck" thing is all [livejournal.com profile] feste_sylvain's fault.

Even though one of her youngests first sentences was "Yankees Suck!"

Hell, that isn't even swearing, that's just a statement of fact....

It's so hard to discipline your children when you're busting a gut laughing about it.

Out of the mouths of babes...they really do pay attention to what you do and say! Ack. :)

And will, given the chance, repeat it at the most inopportune time.

Which is why dear spouse and I are already watching our language when we drive. M may be only 3 months old but imitation is just around the corner.

I almost just dropped dead laughing.

Yeah, the problem is that I don't actually believe that business about "grownup words." There's no moral reason why kids can't use words like that. The only reason we don't want them to use them is that it embarrasses us, and that's not a great reason for telling them not to use those words. That's why I had trouble figuring out what to say to Morgan. :-)

I got a million of these, baby. Better watch out.

I luuurve those kids. They're trouble, I tells ya.

Like I need you to tell me this :-)

[identity profile] harimad.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Here's a reason* - there's a time and place for words like that and children have a weak grasp of what constitutes appropriate time and place.

* Which is not to say my reason should apply to your kids.
