twinkie tv

I have gone and gotten myself addicted to the silliest, most outlandish and yet most strangely, compulsively watchable TV I can recall seeing in a long time.

I am speaking, of course, of 24.  By now I am halfway through the first season.

The concept for the show intrigued me a long time ago, but at least I had (barely) enough sense not to try to watch it on prime-time terms.  Smart move.  This show was made for watching on DVD: in sporadic, terrifically unhealthy binges, staying up till 3 a.m., followed by morning-after regret and self-loathing and, of course, a shameful craving for the next hit.  It is Twinkie TV all the way, and being bad never felt so good.

My self-bargain is no compulsive TV without activity. I spent a *lot* of time folding laundry and riding the stationary bicycle in a very short period when I rented 24.

I LOVE 24, have them all on DVD.

Yay, Keifer! ;)

This post actually had me laughing out loud, which meant of course I had to read it to J...we've avoided like the plague never gotten into 24, since we don't know what access to DVD's we'd have here besides the obligatory Blockbuster video which is across town at the bus station. And haven't really tried to find out, since we're still watching the DVD's we brought with us.

But my sister, with the cinematography minor and the film snobbiness that accompanies it, loves 24 with a burning passion. We'll likely succomb someday.

BTW, how you describe 24 is sort of how I'd describe the 'new' Battlestar Galactica. Though we've only seen a season and a half of it.

Oh my god, yes. The first season of 24 is the best thing to watch on DVD ever.

I hate that show with a passion.

Once, just once, I'd like to see Jack have to fill out a travel claim.

Now that seems like a good idea, but I'm not at all sure this is a show that I could watch while doing something else that requires even a tiny bit of attention, like folding laundry. I feel reluctant to take my eyes away from the screen lest I miss a crucial plot point. Though at this point they seem to be starting to tie subplots back together rather than introducing new ones, so maybe I'm over the hump.

See, it's not really the film snob in me that is enjoying this, I don't think. My inner film geek went nuts over The West Wing and to some degree Studio 60. This is the part of me that likes playing Half-Life, staying up late rereading Stephen King novels and eating peanut butter cups, and watching Snakes on a Plane (in an auditorium full of loopy MIT students -- absolutely the only way to see that movie).

BTW, how you describe 24 is sort of how I'd describe the 'new' Battlestar Galactica. Though we've only seen a season and a half of it.

Excellent! I'll have another junk food show to catch up on in a few years!

My favorite dangling subplot so far has to be the bisexual lesbian terrorist assassins, which AFAICT they still haven't gotten around to wrapping up. The plot is so insane I just sit there with this big goofy grin on my face. Kind of like Bill Cosby listening to "Chicken Heart" on the radio. No! Literally the only TV I've watched in the last five years or so has been:

The West Wing
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
Oscar and Olympics telecasts

Really, I think that's all of it.

Are you hinting that I'm going to need to get myself hooked on another video crack?

Veronica Mars is awesome. She's kind of the Nancy Drew of the 21st century.
