high school meme

I avoid most of these memes, but as soon as I saw this one from [livejournal.com profile] feste_sylvain I knew the possibilities were huge:

1. Who was your best friend? My best friend at the time was Jason, who didn't go to my high school at all at that point.  In school I had a crowd but not one best friend -- they included [livejournal.com profile] crepuscular and our mutual friend Nya.

2. What sports did you play?  I didn't play sports.

3. What kind of car did you drive?  I didn't drive a car.

4. It's Friday night, where were you?  At home watching "Friday Night Videos."  I was such a dork.

5. Were you a party animal?  See above. :-)

6. Were you considered a flirt?  Not in high school.  It took me years to get to that point.

7. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir?  We didn't have these.

8. Were you a nerd?  I was such a nerd they named Nerdsville after me.  I was practically the school's official nerd, if there was such a thing.

9. Did you get suspended/expelled?  No, but hardly anyone ever got suspended or expelled from our school.

10. Can you sing the fight song?  We didn't have one.

11. Who was your favorite teacher?  Nancy Coutourie, who helped mold me into a complete math nut :-)

12. What was your school's full name?  St. Ann's School.  (I think the school's official name was not actually "St. Ann's School for the Gifted," thank god)

13. School mascot?  We didn't  have one.

14. Did you go to Prom?  We didn't have one.

15. If you could go back and do it over, would you?  I've never actually thought about it that way.  There are a lot of things I'd like to think I'd do differently but I'm not sure I'd want to try to do it all over again, no.

16. What do you remember most about graduation?  Succeeding.

17. Where were you on senior skip day?  We didn't have one.  Every day was "senior skip day," really.

18. Did you have a job your senior year?  I didn't have one.  I don't think most kids in our school did.  Most of them came from pretty affluent backgrounds.

19. Where did you go most often for lunch?  There was a little sub shop on Montague St. that I liked a lot, but have completely forgotten the name.  Awesome salami and provolone.

20. Have you gained weight since then?  Holy smoke yes.

21. What did you do after graduation?  Got wasted at the grad party, of course.  I think I threw up twice while walking home.

22. When did you graduate?  1988.

23. Who was your Senior prom date?  We didn't have one.  Honest.

24. Are you going to your 10 year reunion?  Skipped it.  20-year is coming up, though.

25. Who was your home room teacher?  We didn't have one.

26. Who will repost this after you?  Someone who went to a more typical high school, I'm sure.

Your high school experience sounds shockingly similar to mine.

As you wind up calling attention to: There are two different senior prom questions here, and the second assumes a particular answer to the first.

I boycotted my senior prom because I had just come out and I felt I was making a political statement by not going -- which I was in the sense that I told everybody who asked me about the prom why I wasn't going. This was 1974, a couple of years before the sorts of statements kids made were to take a same-sex date. But in 1974, except perhaps in some major cities, there was absolutely no fucking way of finding another gay kid. I did have sort of a girlfriend at the time, who came out as a lesbian a few years later, and we talked about going into NYC to have dinner and see a show instead of going to the prom, but I didn't see that through -- I wish I had, it was a good idea.

In some ways, in retrospect, it was a meaningless and futile gesture to defiantly refuse to go to the prom because I was gay -- I mean, so what? It was just a big party. But on the whole when I think about it I am inappropriately proud of that kid. I mean, I hadn't even had sex yet.

Oh my GAWD! How could I forget Rocky Horror!?? I think I must have seen it at least 11 times in high school at the Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor.

Thanks for that memory. Hee.

Interesting that you and [livejournal.com profile] ceo had the same favorite teacher....

Nerdsville? (grin)

Well my high school probably wasn't typical either - it was very large. They called it "Sin City" and there were armed Narcotics officers roaming the halls. Hey - it was the 70s and early 80s ya know?

(used this pic because it was taken the year after graduation so close to my style then)

[identity profile] crepuscular.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
hee. I can attest to most of the above. I am not so sure about #6 though. and didn't we have a mascot- that old sheep in the lobby? :)

ps - have you heard that nya and g.g. are getting married, imminently?

I really don't think I was a flirt. I think of a flirt as someone who behaves saucily toward other people without necessarily intending to follow through on it. I would ALWAYS have followed through on my saucy behavior if given a chance.

ps - have you heard that nya and g.g. are getting married, imminently?

I DID SEE THAT! Thank you for reminding me -- now that I know where they're living I can track down a phone number so I can call and taunt her mercilessly.

all right.. point taken. just so you know you were saucy!

(and I have g's cell # if you want it)
