Date: 2008-04-26 06:22 am (UTC)The funny thing is that the plot, such as it is, is virtually identical to my favorite Disney attraction of my childhood, "Mission to Mars". (In the Tomorrowland building that now houses Stitch's Escape.)
(spoilers, if that's an issue for anyone)
Just like M:S, you're going on a trip to Mars, and they used the tech of the day to simulate acceleration (the seats in the auditorium folded down a little). Just like M:S, they explain that the trip would normally take months, but there's a workaround (hyperspace in the old ride, hypersleep in the new). And in both, your planned smooth landing is disrupted by asteroids/meteors. They're not remotely the same as rides, but the kinship surely isn't accidental. (Though MtM was more overtly educational, with lots of Apollo stock footage and reconstructions based on Mariner data. M:S, by contrast, is a vastly more immersive and impressive ride.)
Some years back, Disneyland sold mix-your-own CDs of the soundtracks of old rides. Naturally I bought "Mission to Mars", along with the original Carousel of Progress audio. (Of course, I hadn't anticipated YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhXFO-0oMYc&feature=related).)
