I think this is the new generation's version of writing lines on the blackboard:

Dear Mom & Dad,
I had to stay in for recess because I was making the other kids laugh in
class by saying silly things loudly. I will try to behave next time by not
talking loudly in class.  Of course, the temptation will be too much, but I
will still try hard.  I will be respectful to my teacher.

Unfortunately I'm just the wrong person to impose discipline on this one. Especially if I keep giggling whenever I think about it.

I got the email today that Alyssa had forgotten her spanish homework and had to stay inside at recess to redo it. No slack,crap rains down the second she gets picked up in the car,you got to feel for them. No hiding the notes for these kids

I understand why they withhold recess as punishment for misbehavior - after all, it wouldn't have much effect to threaten them with missing math class! - yet I've always found it ironic that the very kids who usually receive this punishment are the ones who most need to go outside and run around.

You know, that's an excellent question. I think I'll bring it up with the teachers and see if there's an alternative form of discipline we need to apply.

As I recall, having to sit down and send an email to the parents is stage 2. Stage 3 is a parent-teacher conference. Sigh.

How about "boot camp" instead of recess? That way you'd burn off energy, but it would be bossy and regimented and not free-form like recess.

Then again, some people would probably love boot camp and it wouldn't be punishment.

Actually, my 10-year-old would probably be MUCH more motivated to not get this if he had to miss math class. He has to miss recess a lot, and his teachers have totally noticed "it doesn't seem to be much of a punishment..."

It IS a fine art to distract the class by talking quietly, rather than loudly, and I'm glad he is determined to learn it. THAT skill will carry him through life.

It's a way of doing something repeatedly in a computer program. For this purpose I'd use a for loop, though. Here it is in C:

for(i = 0; i < 1000; i++) 
{
  printf("I will not make the other kids laugh by talking loudly in class.\n");
}

That first line means "do this repeatedly, incrementing the variable i every time, and stop when i gets to 1000".

There's a Fox Trot comic where Jason does precisely this, writing more or less the above on the blackboard, and the teacher says "Nice try."
