I dropped off the formal written complaint at the police HQ today.

Thanks to all of you for your support and suggestions, especially [livejournal.com profile] psongster and [livejournal.com profile] jwg for your suggestions for people to contact. I sent mail to Henrietta Davis and to Cara Seidelman, and (at the suggestion of Michael Halle of the Cambridge Bike Committee) Sgt. Kathy Murphy, who heads the bike patrol. Seidelman agreed that I had done nothing wrong, and that the responses of the officers I interacted with indicate a serious problem with the CPD's approach to bicycles. She got ahold of Sgt. Murphy, who tried to call me in several different places (when I was unfortunately out and did not have my cell phone). Someone also rang some bells with a Sgt. Burke who works in IA, and who contacted me urging me to submit the written complaint.

So after the holiday I'll have lots of leads to follow up. Hopefully some of them will bear fruit!

But it appears as though you've made pretty significant headway in those 5 days (3 business days?). Considering the bureaucratic machine you're dealing with, that's not bad.

I just want to add to the chorus of moral support -- I'm glad to hear you are following through on this, and that your initial responses seem to be productive. It sounds like you are getting allies.

I'm selfishly glad you did this. If the bad people get a stern talking-to from the good people, maybe there will be more good people in the end.

I'm impressed you got any response. Here's hoping that this burst of reaction does not vanish into the maw of the BPD bureaucracy.

I expect it's at least partly because I found someone on the city council who was willing to approach the PD on my behalf.

Well, it's not the BPD -- this is Cambridge, which might be marginally better.
