I have in my hands a document known as "The List Of Montstrs", apparently penned by my elder son.  It appears to describe a taxonomy of beasts of the nether world.  Whether it is organized by phylum or genus or in order of scariness is not clear to me.

The List Of Montstrs includes the typical montstrs that we are all familiar with, including:

zombes
gosts
vampirs
scalitins
aleins
mumes
banshe
monstr cat

It also includes some of the more obscure members of this family, like:

lung meis
lindorns
vanggl dash
bunyip
joo fret
howsickago
monkfish
wulfucin

But most intriguing of all:

dog with wigs

It's enough to scare me, that's for sure.

In fairness to Morgan, monkfish are pretty scary:

I see a great series: "M, Monster Hunter!"

I love that he's heard of the bunyip already. Australians would be proud.

Is howsickago related to the Wendigo?

I showed this picture to Morgan while discussing the List of MONTSTRS.

His eyes grew wide, and he said:

"THAT... is just cool."

Australians have nothing to do with it. It's
Philadelpians who know the true bunyip.

Well, Philadelphians of a certain age, I guess.

"Bertie the Bunyip" was written by an Aussie, and is based on the Australian legend (http://home.iprimus.com.au/gunnado/bunyip.html).

(I didn't even have to google for the name of the show: when we were told the Bunyip legend when I was in Australia, one of the people I was with talked about a kid's show he saw with a bunyip.)

Hrm. I was going to see about supplying more dogs with wigs, but I was already beaten to it. I think I'd be terrified if Shad, sporting my morning hair, came by.

Could it be a spello for "dog with wings"? When I was a kid, the thought of anything hostile coming from the sky was pretty frightening.

You get the gold star! I asked Morgan about this list this morning, and he explained that that was indeed supposed to be "dog with wings". It is Dogster, also known as "Dogstr", and was proposed by one of his colleagues at day care.

Yes! The bunyip! I asked him about that one specifically this morning, and he said that it looks like a boar with big teeth and has a really long tail. Which as far as I can tell is consistent with traditional bunyip legend.

had he seen a monkfish before?

this is disturbing to me because... well, my best friend, [livejournal.com profile] baniszew, and i [see icon] had a complicated system of code words to talk about boys, and related things several years ago. it was a combination of tolkien refrences and fish and other aquatic things. And one of my dearest friends was 'monkfish', and i had never actually seen a picture before.

has Morgan seen the octopus-eats-shark video? I bet he'd love it! Luckily we only had a shark in our code words, not an octopus, or that would be really weird.
