There appears to be a tradition of giving dead authors a cheap plastic ballpoint pen. Perhaps it only happens on Memorial Day?

Here we see Nathaniel Hawthorne with his cheap blue pen. Maybe this is something the old, bitter local writers do to young fresh-faced aspiring writers, like a snark hunt.

Ralph Waldo Emerson doesn't get any pen at all! What's up with that? He doesn't rate?
