A commute of 4' to get to the office each day really isn't conducive to a long bike ride. The jealousy arises in being able to adapt a daily routine into a lovely bike ride.
I ride my bike or walk to lunch each day, but it's an 'optional' thing (I can eat at home or the like), whereas Tim needs to commute every day, he can choose to bikeride or not, but the commute must happen.
Also, commuting Bedford -> Cambridge is an outstanding commute route. The bike trail + cambridge is great, as compared to trying to bikeride around Natick, which is... dangerous to say the least.
Mass Ave in Cambridge is no ride in the park -- someone tries to kill me in a truly inventive way every time I ride down it -- but your house is a bit tricky too, being on Route 27. That said, I biked to your house from Waltham once, and the only part that felt dangerous to me was Route 20. The rest was fine, and the back roads of Weston are *beautiful.* I'll haul my ass out there and ride with you one of these weeks before it snows if you want company :)
Funny! Mass Ave. in Cambridge is busy and aggressive, but I far prefer it to the outer sub-highways like Route 20, where people are going by so fast I'm not sure they'll even have time to notice me.
They're both scary in their own special ways! *beam* Some back highways seem ok to me (like 27 through Carlisle or 225 in Bedford) and some don't, and I think it depends mostly on the speed and aggression of drivers.
