It's the first reasonably successful trip sans training wheels. We went out once before, maybe a month ago, but it frustrated him so much that after one run he refused to try a two-wheeled bike again.
This time he made it about a hundred feet across NARA field on his own, and later rode all the way down the length of the field. He's not finished with the frustration part, but now he clearly has enough self-confidence to come back to it.
Ha! Nara park is where we got Ian off trainers last week!
Having read an article about how bad trainings wheels are, we're going to take a stab at teaching colton to ride without them. We will present his new bike for his birthday next week without training wheels. We hope to use the grass hill trick for him, too.
I don't remember reading an article about how bad training wheels are, but after watching Quinn on them I realized how limited their use is. Once he reached a certain skill level, they're seriously unsafe since he couldn't corner worth beans, but at the same time he didn't have enough confidence to balance on his own.
I'm amazed at how well the grassy hill trick worked. This was literally the second time I tried it, and he took right off. (In fairness, I think he was ready to leave the training wheels behind quite a long time ago, he just had to be convinced he was ready.)
