Three dozen kindergarteners, hopped up on birthday cake and soda, running around an indoor play structure -- IN THE DARK! Maybe they get a kickback from the local ambulance service.

All of the parties at these places I've been to, they run the little blighters around for an hour and then load them up on sugar... and then send them home. At least these people do it in a more sensible order.

That's actually how they do it here too. This party had about 15-20 minutes left after the kids were done with pizza and cake, so they opted to send them back in to the ball pits. At that point the "flashlight tag" portion of the afternoon had begun. Lord save us all.

It could be worse: the birthday party I went to last weekend for one of Benjamin's classmates was at the Woburn YMCA, and along with a big bouncy castle they were trying the kids out on T-ball and floor hockey. Hey look, we have a gym full of hyperactive preschoolers, let's give them sticks and clubs!

And when these places aren't dark they're full of flashing, blinking, strobing lights (otherwise known as migraine triggers). And OMG the noise! The noise, noise, noise, noise! Oh how I hated those places. After learning my lesson once or twice, I refused to stay through the parties, it was bad enough just dropping off and picking up.

While I was there I just kept looking around and thinking to myself: all they'd have to do is put up a glass wall between the play area and the cafeteria, junk the lousy fluorescent lighting and add a few inexpensive floor lamps, put in some comfy chairs and some newspaper racks, and I would want to come spend time there.

OK, I know that these changes aren't "a simple matter of" anything for a business that runs on margin, but I can dream, dammit!
