I have nothing to say at the moment -- I'm just posting to move yesthattom's post about a talk by Erin McKean off my friends page so the bloody video won't autoplay every time I reload my friends page.

(It's a really interesting talk, honestly, just a bone-stupid presentation.)

You can set your own lj settings so that no pictures or embedded video ever auto-loads. Under Manage Accounts, go to Viewing Options, and set it so that you get image and video placeholders.

I like that option because I'm often in a room with ten or thirty other people, at school, when I'm looking at my f-list.

Yeah, I know about that option but I don't like it as much -- I don't usually have to worry about bothering people around me and I like getting at least a screenshot as a sort of preview on Google and YouTube videos. I know, I'm being cranky, but hey! It's my journal! I got the right!

Funny.

I was listening to the talk, and while she does a great service to the understanding that words' meanings are organic, and that dictionaries are just time-freeze snapshots of usage, she fails to understand that pronunciation is, too. Indeed, she apologizes for having "horrible pronunciation" when in fact, even more so than meaning, it is organic, and any record of pronunciation is just a time-freeze snapshot of a particular community's usage.
