Okay, so not having "reading" on my interests list was pretty dumb.

But but but, "Metallica"? "bible"? "country music"? Saints preserve us.

Saints preserve us.

In a vinegar-and-spice brine, or with lots of MSG? Either way, get a good vacuum seal!

Meanwhile, I got things like "santacon", "applied surrealism", and "conspiracy". My favorite by far though was "evil clowns". }:) -H...

I apparently don't have enough weirdly-interested friends (or perhaps none that list their weirder more-uncommon interests) so this meme gives me an error and an empty (null) result. Hrmf.

Was it? I don't have "breathing" on my interests list, either... I guess I thought it went without saying.

Well, I have met people who just don't care to read, and don't, if it's not something that someone else has required them to do.

Hmm. Maybe I haven't actually met anyone like that, but just heard about them from third parties.

Anyway, after having kids, I found that between family and work I could go months without making the time to sit down and pick up a book. Depressing, but it seems to make it worth putting explicitly on my interests list.

Your point is taken, though. I'm not sure that "laughing" is something I plan to put there. I enjoy doing it, for sure, but it's not like it's a hobby or anything....

I am bemused by "God", "Christianity" and "Bible" -- do you have conventionally religious folks on your friendslist?

Most of the interests suggested for me were a little better, though the software -- being too dumb to eliminate duplicates -- suggested "tea" when I already have iced tea (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=iced+tea), "autumn" when I have autumn in New England (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=autumn+in+New+England), "childbirth" when I have childbirth education (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=childbirth+education) and natural childbirth (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=natural+childbirth), "anthropology" when I have paleoanthropology (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=paleoanthropology). Also "music" when I have guitar (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=guitar), singing (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=singing) and folk music (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=folk+music). Some were fair guesses (movies, mythology, Boston, poetry, women, Buddhism, babies); some were just a little off (Shakespeare, knitting, dreams, art); Ani di Franco, I dunno -- never heard her. "Kissing" was spot-on. "Camping", however, is a howler.

Conventionally? No. But there is [livejournal.com profile] stephe, who is Christian in sort of the way that you are Catholic, and certainly a scholar of religion by any measure.

though the software -- being too dumb to eliminate duplicates

To be fair to them, LJ only returns exact matches when you search for common interests. If you search for people interested in "tea", you only get people who have listed "tea" as an interest -- no "iced tea", "teapots", or "tea cozies." So it makes some sense not to consider "tea" the same thing as "iced tea."

In fact, I'm not sure I'd want it to try to be "smarter," or it might conclude that you should also be interested in anteaters, beefsteak, and steamboats. :-)

Metallica isn't that much of a stretch (and they were actually, IMHO, a very good band until a few years back). Neither is country music, depending on how you define the term. I can't see you sitting down and listening to Garth Brooks or Shania Twain, but I could see you appreciating some of the older artists who get lumped under the "country" label.

"bible" is a bigger stretch, but if you suddenly got into archaeology or the history of the Levant, I could see it.

It's true, I'm very fond of the kind of old-timey and bluegrass music that sometimes runs under "country." And so far I don't think I've heard a Johnny Cash song I didn't like. But that's different from counting "country music," as a genre, under my interests.

[livejournal.com profile] keyne is clearly responsible for this goof! :-)

All right, buster, just for that I'm making you listen to every Garth Brooks album we own.
