[livejournal.com profile] omegabeth is in need of a Rails hosting service that can support a medium-large Rails-driven web site.  I can't help very much with recommendations, since my company kind of does its own hosting. :-)

I know some of you are Ruby and/or Rails developers.  Can any of you recommend a Rails hosting service from personal experience?

this is not something we can do on msb2 or boomer? or is it not something we -should- do?

We could conceivably do it, but supporting a Rails application is far enough outside our usual purview that I think it's not a good idea for us to try to take it on right now.

I use siteground for cohousing.org - they are a bit of a pain in the ass to get support from (they try and make you do a ton of automated stuff before they will talk to you), but otherwise generally good.

No clues about their rails service in particular, though.

I use a2hosting.com for my personal site as well as for our dance organization and they seem pretty reliable and do respond to support requests. I don't know how well their rails support is but our web developer is going to be doing some rails work for a possible reimplementation of our web site.

I've had good luck with Dreamhost: http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting-features.html#ruby

Here's a promo code, if you do choose to go with them: ljrails

Thanks, I've heard a couple of suggestions for Dreamhost. Have you used their Rails support in particular, or do you just use them as a semi-generic hosting facility?

Mostly as semi-generic PHP hosting. Here's their current documentation on using Rails with them: http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Ruby_on_Rails

++ for dreamhost (they're also "green" and are certified in that, though you can read exactly what that means on their site). I use it for a bunch of sites.

I've been having a good experience with Heroku (http://www.heroku.com).

You don't have to use their hosted IDE, you can just upload project files, or do remote access to their git repository.

The backend is hosted on Amazon S3, but they're doing more than just virtualizing your app on a server -- you get a piece of a fault tolerant cluster instead.

And it's free, at least for now. Eventually it will be priced on volume.

I'm pretty happy with MediaTemple overall. They seem to have pretty good Rails support, though I don't have any personal experience with it. Mostly I stick with them because their platform is damned cool, it also scales on demand pretty durned well.
