Recalling Edwin Edwards' famous quote, that in order to lose re-election he'd have to be "caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy" ....

... anyone know how I could get in touch with the McCain campaign?

(I know, I should ask Soren, but somehow I don't think he'd be enthusiastic about helping me out with this...)

Strictly speaking, Obama was comfortably on course to defeat Ryan prior to the scandal. As of the end of May, 2004, Obama was leading Ryan 52-30, which may help explain the party's willingness to dump the latter over the side. (Though not its... unique... replacement strategy.) Granted, I thought that his strategy of "establish an overwhelming lead over the proposed successor to an unpopular departing office-holder of the other party, and then keep it" would be sufficient this time around as well.

(I still think that's the way to bet, but the post-convention bounce of McCain-Palin is better than I'd've predicted they'd be doing at this point. I was expecting an election closer to Clinton-Dole, where the former was 13 points ahead at this point in the cycle.)

Or Obama could try the strategy (http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/29/obamas.first.campaign/index.html) that won him his 1996 seat in the legislature, and see if he can get the signatures that put McCain on the ballot invalidated. :-)

Yeah, McCain is doing very well right now.

As for the signature strategy. Uhhh.....

Do you think McCain can pull a Bobby Rush?

If McCain can become the favored candidate of Mayor Daley and John Stroger, there'll be no stopping him, but I have to admit it doesn't strike me as terribly likely. :-)

(I'm not even sure that the latter is actually less likely than the former.)

Yeah, Obama has been successful cultivating both the independent Dems (if such an entity can be said to still exist) and the machine Dems here.

I predict this one will be a squeaker. I'm going to treat it like a ball game and go get my funny hat and start cheering. Go team!
