My ex-gf's dad was the first time I ran into one of these folks. The house was falling apart, the kids wore hand-me-downs, and the car was a 20 year old beater, but he needed a compressor running in the bedroom to float the lead platter on the living room turntable*. The speakers were worth somewhere in the neighborhood of what I paid for my current car.

I suspect I could make a fortune selling literal snake oil to audiophiles in the form of a "herbal remedy" that claimed to improve hearing. "Finally, be able to hear what your system is capable of!"



*Which meant any time you listened to LPs there was a faint vibration and the sound of compressor noise in the distance. (Most audiophile magazines agree industrial machinery in the vicinity may affect sound quality.) He worked on an assembly line and his other hobby was pistol shooting, so there was some question whether he could hear much at all...
