I decided it wasn't worth trying to explain the burglar thing on his way out. We took the photo and then took down the note, since the neighborhood kids cheerfully ignored it and knocked on our door asking for our boys anyway :-)

On the serious side, I imagine your particular house setting will present rather a deterrent, proximity, community focus and all.
