living in the future

Sometimes I love living in the future. It's not all fun and games, we may not have our flying cars, but it's still pretty awesome that, when I hear on the radio on the way to work about an FBI raid in Watertown, I can use a portable phone to search the news until I find an address, get a map with directions, and be there in ten minutes to take pictures of the event, bike to work and put them on the Internet within the hour.

I mean, cripes. That's just cool.

Wow, that's awesome---I saw the pictures in my flickr RSS feed first and then came here to see what was up. No hassle from the FBI? Was the site crowded with onlookers or journalists?

There were a couple dozen onlookers, yeah, and three or four news vans. You can see where they roped off the scene itself with police tape, but the rest of the sidewalk was pretty much open access.

I expected to get more static from the newsies, actually. They all had cameras set up on the sidewalk pointing across the street at the house, and I anticipated someone yelling at me while I walked back and forth behind their camera rigs. Maybe they took me for a freelance journo? :-)

I was picking up some reel-to-reel tapes from a funky old audio shop in Brookline, and that's how I found out that the Mobil station across the street was under suspicion for the same thing.

There was a news camera just sitting there, no one around. I looked through the viewfinder because I could, then walked in front of it to get home.
