i don't like having my toes forcibly separated anyways, but even if i did... i have the same problem! i was looking at that picture and thinking "that's not how MY toes are shaped..."
Tim actually has a longer second toe on at least one of his feet. He was wavering between two sizes and went back to get the next size up, which seems to have solved the problem.
