keeping up to date

I don't make time for it because, internally, I don't consider it a high priority. Maybe it isn't, and yet I manage to find time to do lots of other things that are probably less fulfilling. (This is true of so much in my life that it's clearly a more fundamental problem.)
I've never been able to get past the narcissistic aspect of it. That probably sounds strange, but I've always assumed that unless proven otherwise, people don't care much about me. Probably a leftover coping mechanism from high school. It actually surprised me when a couple of friends gently prodded me recently about keeping up to date -- in a way it hadn't occurred to me that they'd *want* me to.
Most of the things that happen in my life don't seem interesting enough to journal. That might be, but who am I to judge? :-)
Anyway, I suppose this is my New Year's Resolution, or something like it, to try to keep in better touch with my friends.

Date: 2003-06-01 01:09 pm (UTC)I have a little bit of the same sort of thing about thinking nobody cares about my minor dramas, but on the other hand, I love it when my friends post about a minor confrontation they had at work or something neat they saw in a store window or something like that.
The thing about posts to LiveJournal is that they're a lot less intrusive (meaning "interruptive", I think) than, say, sending email out to all your friends. Your friends put you on their default-view friends page because they want to know what's up with you, and if they don't have time for a particular entry (as long as you use cut tags judiciously), it's easy enough for them to skip to the next entry in their friends list.
So basically, it seems like a perfect medium for low-urgency chatter. And the thing I like about it is that it makes it easier for me to keep up with the day-to-day texture of my friends' lives, even the ones I don't see very often, and even if I don't necessarily read every one of their entries. (I kind of wish Tigris and Tom would take it up, because it would be great for that sort of staying-connected-from-afar sort of thing.)
