One of the local (Philadelphia) news stations found a convoy of tractor-trailers that had hauled ice down to Tennessee and were sent back to this area. I forget where the ice had originated. Some FEMA official told the news crew to get offa the private property, and the trucks were moved to some location not visible from the road. I wonder if it's at least some of the same shipment.

And here it is: WPVI-TV (http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=local&id=3460390): "Dalvir Singh says he picked up ice in California, took it to Louisiana, and now here, having never removed a single bag of ice from the load."

there were three headlines in the Onion the week Katrina struck that I later saw in actual news stories.

That was a common Watergate-era complaint: the satirists and political cartoonists couldn't keep ahead of real life. Every time they thought they'd exaggerated and parodied beyond belief, the idea hit the real-news headlines the next week.

This has been in the local headlines for days, because a bunch of trucks of ice were hanging around in Gloucester (which happens to contain one of the largest cold-storage facilities in the northeast). It's been suggested by a number of folks that throwing it all away and making new ice if necessary would have way cheaper than what they were paying all the truckers.

It would have been in character for this bunch of yahoos to have thrown it all into the Gulf in an effort to create a cold-water region to draw power from Rita.
