the staff of life
Feb. 28th, 2008 08:43 am When Erika works the evening shift at the restaurant, she brings home the unused focaccia that they otherwise would have thrown out.
The loaves they make are, no joke, the size of serving platters. Last night she brought home six. Here are five of them, with my humble coffee cup for perspective.
It's very tasty bread! But there's, um, a lot of it. I think we see breakfast strata in our future. And possibly some kind of savory bread pudding.

Date: 2008-02-28 01:58 pm (UTC)Don't forget breadcrumbs, stored in the freezer. Savory french toast. Dippers for hummus and other dip. Pizza? Fancy grilled cheese. Sandwiches, of course. Freeze for later uses such as the aforementioned savory french toast and bread pudding.
But how can a restaurant serve something that size??? Doesn't that fill up the customers or a lot get wasted? No wonder USA'ns have trouble with our waistlines.

Date: 2008-02-28 07:03 pm (UTC)The in-joke there was the stack size. Tourists who came in unaware would leave the restaurant flabbergasted, toting frisbee-sized foil packages of mammoth pancakes. They made a nice gift to the less fortunate.
(And I suppose there were not any homeless people lo-carbing back then, so they appreciated the gifts in all their excess. I really should post about this in my journal.)
