the staff of life, originally uploaded by qwrrty.

When Erika works the evening shift at the restaurant, she brings home the unused focaccia that they otherwise would have thrown out.

The loaves they make are, no joke, the size of serving platters. Last night she brought home six. Here are five of them, with my humble coffee cup for perspective.

It's very tasty bread! But there's, um, a lot of it. I think we see breakfast strata in our future. And possibly some kind of savory bread pudding.

Maybe they're not accompaniments. Maybe they're trenchers.

Don't forget breadcrumbs, stored in the freezer. Savory french toast. Dippers for hummus and other dip. Pizza? Fancy grilled cheese. Sandwiches, of course. Freeze for later uses such as the aforementioned savory french toast and bread pudding.

But how can a restaurant serve something that size??? Doesn't that fill up the customers or a lot get wasted? No wonder USA'ns have trouble with our waistlines.

Errr, I don't believe those are individual portions. Those are the breads made and are cut up and served a few at a time in place of dinner rolls or the like. :)

Seems to me you need a bigger coffee cup.

This is almost certainly true. But I do not think it actually has a bearing on my current dilemma.

Bigger mug:
1) makes bread look smaller
2) DUNK!

I recently found Tim a magnet to take to the office (and remember where he works...): DRINK YOUR COFFEE! PEOPLE IN INDIA ARE SLEEPING!

He slapped it on the 8th-floor coffee machine and fled :-)

Well, those look properly focaccia-sized to me.

But indeed, it's a lot. Slice and freeze, then you can toast right out of the freezer.

Maybe you could bring a loaf or two to the MC potluck. :)

Breakfast strata? As in, geological levels indicating breakfasts past?

Often. Although the concept of leftover bacon is alien to me.

There is no leftover bacon - there is only bacon I haven't seen yet.

When it goes stale you can use it to make Ribollita (bread & bean soup). Mmmmmmm, such goodness!

Seeing that pic reminded of my visits to Pancakes Make People Happy whenever I was in Manhattan in the 1990s.

The in-joke there was the stack size. Tourists who came in unaware would leave the restaurant flabbergasted, toting frisbee-sized foil packages of mammoth pancakes. They made a nice gift to the less fortunate.

(And I suppose there were not any homeless people lo-carbing back then, so they appreciated the gifts in all their excess. I really should post about this in my journal.)

Actually, if the freezer is running, it takes a bit of energy to freeze the bread, but the freezer actually uses less energy the more stuff you have in it (because only cold air flows out the door when you open it - the less air you have to re-cool, the more efficient your freezer is).

Oh, heck yes, I brought a loaf in first thing this morning. And as [livejournal.com profile] agaran said, they would be a fine thing to bring to the Mosaic potlucks. We can certainly find stuff to do with them -- it's still just pretty intimidating to look at.
