naming conventions, originally uploaded by qwrrty.

My parents' second choice was "ALEXBOXANDER."

Hey, I've always thought Insert Name Here was a lovely middle name.

IIRC, there's a display screen at some point in Star Trek:TNG with information about "Lt. Cmdr. NFN NMI Data".

I'm partial to "Help I'm trapped in a driver's license factory (http://xkcd.com/327/)."

I occasionally get asked how to pronounce "Nmi."

At Verizon Wireless stores you now have to enter your name into a computerized system to get helped (ed note: the system does not always register your entry; check with the help desk to make sure you're on the list). The screen instructs one not use leave anything blank. So of course my name at any Verizon Wireless store is Bianca Blank. So far no employee has gotten the joke. (Frankly I'd be happy if they got a collective clue first.)

That reminds me of the time that my now-former company gave me some stock as a sign of their appreciation for me -- and got my name wrong on the stock certificate, which was a truer reflection of their appreciation for me than I think they meant it to be.

It's like that story on snopes.com, with examples like "Ronly Bonly Jones": a man named R.B. Jones enlisted by telling the officer "R-only, B-only, last name Jones."

So... wait... did the employer mess up, or is it actually misspelled on your birth certificate etc.?

Oh god no, it's my employer's screwup. I just noticed it this morning when we were going over our W2s and the like for this year's taxes.

Heh, I figured that was more likely.

My first year at U of C I lived down the hall from a girl whose name was misspelled twice (misspelling in first name, missing letter in last name)--I don't remember the details, but I think it had to do with her Korean-born parents' English being fairly abysmal when she was born. I imagine she had it fixed eventually.
