broken

In the last twelve hours, I have broken my phone and my backpack.

Note for future reference: just because some random flake on a mailing list says they improved their phone's roaming capability by dialing *228, don't assume that you can do the same with yours.  Fortunately, there's a Verizon store in the Galleria.

As for my backpack, I can only say this: for a content delivery service, my employer sure makes lousy personal accessories.

The phone isn't precisely bricked. It still turns on and shows lovely colors and stuff, and generally acts like a phone. But I'm now getting few or no bars where yesterday I had fine coverage, and I cannot make any calls on the phone -- it just produces "CALL FAILED" after trying aimlessly for a few seconds, whether I'm dialing home or *228 or 611.

Here in my cubicle in the middle of Cambridge I'm getting "Searching for Service" where I have never ever ever had a problem getting reception before. So, I dunno.

I'm glad to hear your reply though. I was wondering if maybe I'd just been stupid and selected the wrong option from the *228 menu.

Hmmm. Try *228 again outside, perhaps? It's possible you just got a corrupt DB download. Also, if you haven't power-cycled the phone, that might help too.

I tried redoing *228 all the way in to work, but it failed even when I had four EV/TX bars on the phone. And I did powercycle it first thing this morning.

Anyway, really, there's a Verizon service center about a ten-minute walk from my office, so I'll just go over there and have them work their magic. And if they can't for whatever reason.... well, there's also an Apple Store downstairs from them. *nod*
