Aw, now I can't like you anymore. Yes, I am so old enough to have used, and learned to hate with the passion of One Hundred Thousand Burning Suns, the evil abomination which was TECO, thanksawfully.

Is this about what we own now, or what we lust after? ;-)

Oh, I hadn't thought of that angle :-) It's about what you own now (or, say, what you are realistically aiming for, if you aren't yet a shutterbug).

Canon, but I had to look at the camera and check. I got it for the primary features of 'cheap but not too cheap' and 'uses SD media which my new MacBookPro has a slot for'.

/me is not a photo geek, though I do appreciate the results of a well pointed good light bucket.

I own a Kodak, recommend Canon, and would love a Red One.

I only own a RED ONE metaphorically, with that option. Otherwise Leica

Me? Canon, but not religiously; mostly just because I know several pro/semi-pro photographers who shoot Canon, so I wanted the ability to borrow their lenses. :)

You? Canon or Nikon; really whichever feels better in your hand and offers the best local opportunities for lens-borrowing. At the consumer/prosumer level, there's really not any hands-down advantage to one over the other that you're ever going to notice. They both make awesome gear.

...of course, the µ4/3rds cameras (like the olympus E-Pen) are really sexy. Not sure if I'm willing to give up an actual viewfinder though.

Not surprisingly, I've gone both ways. My video camera is a Canon and my SLR is Nikon. Still not sure if I made the right choice on the SLR, though.

I will note for the record that I do not actually want a RED ONE. I merely want to play with someone else's RED ONE.

Nikon, but a large part of that was that I already had a nice lens for my Nikon film SLR, so I could save a few bucks by getting a Nikon DSLR body that worked with it.

And, of course, emacs.

...but if you want an upscale point-and-shoot, you should totally buy a Canon. I'm having a little bit of a crush on the whole Powershot thing.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

I used to be an emacs person until vim came out and made vi tolerable. Now, sad to say, I prefer it.

OK, so I read the "what you use now" after I answered, and I'm too lazy to go back and change my answer.

What I use now: Sony, for both still and video

What I used to use, and may still have lying around somewhere: Kodak, Bell & Howell, Minolta, various others

What I used to use, and wish I still had (except for the impending lack of film): Polaroid
