My family didn't make this at all. My mother-in-law makes them on top of a pair of bacon strips, fried onto it like a railroad track, and often with syrup poured over the whole thing at the end, and I think she calls it a "hobo sandwich."
I started making these for the kids sans bacon or syrup, and had to look them up to see what they're called. The one I liked best is "toad in the hole," so that's what my kids know them as.
That's what they call them on 'Top Chef'. Only they *never* make just a plain one -- there's always some fancy twist. From what I can recall from back when I actually watched TV.
This one isn't bad but it's a little too large and floppy. We had a smaller one that more closely resembled a traditional cooking mitt that I liked more.
