What's up with this? Every now and then I see a vehicle on the highway -- almost always a big freight truck -- with the words "FREE NP" scrawled on it, usually written in the grime on the back door. This one appeared to have it written in duct tape.

Does anyone know what it means? Google insists that it is either a neopets reference or a topic of research in nuclear physics. I find this doubtful.

pheromone identified this phenomenon a couple of years ago, but as far as I can remember she did not learn the mystic secret either.

Please post when/if you find out. My guess is it's a political statement along the lines of "Free Leonard Peltier" or "Free Nelson Mandela" (coincidentally, "NP" is a common abbreviation for the National Party, which established apartheid).

If it were "STOP NP," then I'd guess it was something like "STOP CHESSIE," the graffiti I used to see at railroad crossings protesting the creation of CSX.

Someone explained it to me awhile ago; it's a political statement I believe. Like a sort of "free nelson mandela" type of thing, though I can't recall for the life of me who "NP" is. At least that's what I was told a few years ago when I asked the same question :)

Exactly. Is there someone in jail "unfairly" for protesting NAFTA or something? Though the truck photographed above looks more like a trash hauler than a goods/produce hauler. Also, I'm not sure how many NAFTA runs there are up and down the Northeast Corridor: a cousin of mine drives a route from Canada to Mexico but he goes via the Midwest, not the East Coast.
