My sister-in-law moved to India last week and is presently in Mumbai.  She hadn't yet sent us contact information for where she's staying now.  We tried her cell, but it's a US cell phone and we have no idea whether it's likely to work over there.

keyne has found the Mumbai Police web site, but we can't read the script in the list of casualties: http://www.mumbaipolice.org/images/news_cp/blast/blast.htm

Anyone have better leads on how to find a list of injured or dead in a Roman alphabet?

[ EDIT 2: Congressman Meehan's office checked with the State Dept. No American casualties in Mumbai. 202 647 5225 is the State Dept. contact if we want to call back later, but they're "pretty confident" now. ]

Maybe the US Consulate (http://mumbai.usconsulate.gov/) in Mumbai? The state department said yesterday that it didn't yet know if Americans were injured or killed in the blasts (http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/001200607120016.htm), so they might be another place to try, although I imagine getting anyone who knows anything on the phone would be a project...

Oy, that's awful. Chances are good that she's fine, and trying to contact you, but the phone lines are overwhelmed by everybody trying to do the same thing. Doesn't make it less stressful waiting, of course. All good wishes to your whole family through this.

I work with 4 people from India in my immediate group, plus lots more nearby/that can be reached by a work social mailing list, and I'm comfortable enough asking them to see if they can read it and scan the list for American names. Oh, how awful.

My sister was in the Peace Corps in Haiti when Duvalier was overthrown in 1986, and she was in Cap-Haitien, where all the trouble started. We didn't hear from her for two weeks. That sucked. :-(

(she was fine; they evacuated her to Port-au-Prince, but communications were iffy for a long time.)

Try contacting her "friends". With their hive mentality, I'm sure they will know all. As for an answer from our FSOs, try a history book on the early 21h century in a few decades..

Good point about the JWs. I don't think we have any contact information for them either but we may pursue that route if we find ourselves in this situation again. keyne did hear back from her after a few days so we're no longer freaking out.
