I know there are people on my friends list who can read the labels, identify the foodstuffs, or both. Come on, people! Show us what you got!

I can't read japanese, but my guess is that the top right is hijiki(seaweed salad)

Yeah, I thought it looked like pickled seaweed too.

Top row, L-R:
Feathers, staples, Green Slime.

Bottom row, L-R:
Boogers, Pepto Bismol, paper clips.

Hope that is helpful!

In case you missed the comments I copied over to irc, one of my Japanese-knowledgeable friends sez:

Well, the pink one they say eggplant for says "taste of koto", I think.
The yellow is "friend of sake."
The upper middle one I think is kizamita something... But I can't see the final character, it's whited out. So shredded something.
The pink is kyo sakura.
The lower right, tsubuyorishiba...
"Choice pickled vegetables", I think.
The green one in the upper right is "smell of springtime."
So no, those aren't labels as you might think.

I wouldn't assume that the labels aren't actually the conventional names for those foods just because the translations don't make sense to us. A literal translation of "buttercup" or "baby's breath", or, for that matter, "eggplant", would probably be equally confusing.

But point taken: knowing what the labels say may not necessarily tell us what the things actually are. :-)
